They were first surnamed Mac Giolla Ultáin after an ancestor Giolla Ultáin, but later changed to Mac Carrghamhna after Carrghamhan, the grandson of Giolla Ultáin. The name means ‘son of Carrghamhan’, a rare personal name meaning ‘spear calf’.
