The Gaelic form of the clan name Mag Fhionnghail means 'son of Fionnghal', a rare personal name.
Ancient Territory: The Ginnells are a branch of the Donegal McGinleys who settled in the Delvin area in the early 1500s. It is believed that two brothers headed south, but the reason is not known. The clan remained low in numbers and nearly became extinct during the Cromwellian period. They enjoyed good relations with the neighbouring Nugent clan.
